Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Noisy-le-Grand is a monumental cross located at the entrance to the ancient cemetery of the city. It is distinguished by its 15th century sculpture, representing on one side the Holy Vierge and on the other the Crucifixion. This monument, probably of Carolingian origin, was initially placed in an abandoned necropolis around the year mil, before being moved around 1740 in its current location.

The cross was mentioned in the 14th century as the Cross of Lady Ysebael, with reference to Isabeau de Valéry, wife of Nicolas de Pacy, lord of Bry-sur-Marne. It thus bears witness to the local medieval history and its link with the noble families of the region. Ranked a historic monument in 1926, it is now accessible from the RER station of Noisy-le-Grand-Mont d'Est.

Its original location, the necropolis of Rue des Mastraits, suggests an ancient funeral use, while its displacement in the eighteenth century reflects the urban evolution of Noisy-le-Grand. The 15th century sculpture, later added, illustrates the symbolic importance of this monument to the community, mixing Carolingian heritage with medieval Christian devotion.
