The chapel and the fresco paintings it contains: classification by decree of 12 December 1910

Origin and history

The cemetery of Saint-Fargeau, located in the department of Yonne in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is distinguished by its L shape, combining an old rectangular part and a modern extension. In the centre of the historical section stands a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, whose interior frescoes, dated from the sixteenth century, have been classified as historical monuments since 1910. These murals illustrate in eleven episodes the Passion of Christ, supplemented by two allegorical representations: the Genealogy of the Virgin and the Meeting of the Three Dead and Living, medieval themes symbolizing the vanity of earthly honors in the face of death.

The chapel, classified by decree of 12 December 1910, is the only protected element of the site. The cemetery also houses a recent collective grave erected against one of its walls, gathering the remains of fourteen French soldiers who died during the 1870 war. No other burial is reported as remarkable, since concessions are systematically renewed by standardized graves at the expiration of their duration.

Located on Rue de l'Étang-Renard, this cemetery reflects both the local religious history, marked by 16th century sacred art, and the memory of national conflicts, with its commemorative tomb of 1870. The management of the site is the responsibility of the municipality of Saint-Fargeau, owner of the premises, although information on its accessibility or tourist vocation remains limited in the available sources.
