Origin and history

The Regional Centre for Contemporary Art Occitanie (CRAC Occitanie), formerly CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon, was founded in 1997 by Noëlle Tissier in Sète. Installed in refrigerated fish warehouses in the port, rehabilitated by architect Lorenzo Piqueras between 1995 and 1997, it is the result of a project initiated in 1993. The financing of the works, shared between the State and the Region, has transformed these industrial places into a cultural space agreed with the Ministry of Culture.

The CRAC Occitanie was born from a collaboration between the school of fine arts in Sète, the residence of artist Villa Saint-Clair and the Paul Boyé space. Since its opening, it has developed regional, national and international partnerships to promote artistic creation by exhibiting works from public and private collections. It also supports the production of contemporary artists' projects.

Since 2004, the centre has strengthened its missions by associating with various cultural actors. In 2018, Marie Cozette became its director, appointed by Carole Delga, President of the Regional Council of Occitanie. CRAC Occitanie remains a key player in the diffusion of contemporary art in southern France, in connection with its Mediterranean environment.
