Origin and history
The International Centre of stained glass (CIV) is located in the enclosure of Loëns, a collection of historic buildings formerly dependent on the cathedral chapter of Chartres. This enclosure, classified as a historic monument since 1862, was originally home to a cellar, attic, prison and a common oven, used in particular to store tithes and rents paid in kind. It was also used as a place of detention for convicts of ecclesiastical justice.
Chartres is world famous for its medieval stained glass windows, especially those of its cathedral, considered one of the most complete and best preserved ensembles in the world. These stained glass windows, mainly dating from the 13th century, cover an area of 2,600 m2 and illustrate biblical scenes, the lives of saints and the activities of the corporations of the time. The "blue of Chartres", an iconic hue, has become an international reference for this art.
The VIC plays a key role in the transmission of this artistic know-how. It offers educational workshops, permanent exhibitions on the history and techniques of stained glass, as well as temporary exhibitions highlighting contemporary artists. The city of Chartres, with its numerous workshops of glass masters, remains a high place for the creation and restoration of stained glass windows, thus perpetuating a centuries-old tradition.
The enclosure of Loëns, where the VIC is installed, is an architectural testimony of the medieval organization linked to the cathedral. Its rehabilitation in a stained glass centre makes it possible to enhance this unique heritage, while offering a space for discovery and learning for visitors. The CIV thus contributes to the cultural outreach of Chartres, a UNESCO World Heritage city thanks to its cathedral and exceptional stained glass windows.
The creation of the VIC is part of a desire to preserve and promote an art that marked the history of Chartres. By combining historical heritage and contemporary creation, the centre offers an educational and artistic approach, attracting visitors from all over the world. He also participates in the training of new glass craftsmen, ensuring the sustainability of this exceptional trade.
