Origin and history

The castle of Bersaillin, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its L-shaped architecture, characteristic of its house body. The latter, built in the 16th and 18th centuries, is accompanied by a chapel and a doorway dating also from the 16th century. These elements reflect the stylistic and functional evolutions of the castle throughout the eras, with significant additions such as the northern portal and the 19th century commons.

The 16th century chapel and doorway testify to the religious and defensive importance of the site at this time. In the 19th century, utility developments were added, such as a fountain and a washbasin built in 1825 according to Dufour's plans. These elements illustrate the adaptation of the castle to the domestic and social needs of the time, while maintaining its architectural prestige.

The castle of Bersaillin has been the subject of successive protections: facades, roofs, chapels, galleries, and interior elements such as the large living room and six 18th century marble fireplaces were inscribed in 1977. In 1994, the park's communes and northern portal were also protected, highlighting the heritage value of the whole. Today, the castle remains a private property, with potential uses such as room rental or guest rooms, although this information is not confirmed.

Located in Bersaillin in the Jura department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, the castle is a notable example of local heritage. Its history is part of that of Franche-Comté, a region where castles played a central role in social and economic organization, especially through their residential, defensive and sometimes agricultural functions.
