Origin and history
The chalet d'Agneux is a building located in the commune of Rully, in Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built in the 1860s, it is part of the picturesque 19th century architectural current, inspired by Swiss chalets. This style, in vogue since the 1840s, reflects a taste for exoticism and escape, typical of the romantic era.
The chalet is distinguished by its interior decoration, including a wallpaper imitating tapestry, and its exterior architecture including a turret and an old chapel. These elements, as well as the terrace and park, have been protected as historical monuments since 12 January 2001. The registration covers the entire estate, stressing its heritage importance.
This type of construction, often associated with an affluent bourgeoisie, bears witness to a period when secondary residences and architectural follies are multiplying in France. The chalet of Agneux thus illustrates the enthusiasm for architecture inspired by foreign models, while integrating into the local landscape of Saône-et-Loire.
