Champ de tumuli dit Tumuli de la Lande du Semis (Cases ZR 68-79, 83-87, 111, 129, 134, 136, 137): inscription by order of 22 March 1983
Origin and history
The tumuli field known as Tumuli de la Lande du Semis is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Sauzon, Morbihan (British). This monument, composed of several funeral terres, is characteristic of collective or individual burials of ancient periods, probably protohistoric or ancient. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 22 March 1983 underlines its heritage importance, although precise data on its dating or historical context remain limited in the available sources.
Tumuli, or funeral terres, were commonly erected in Brittany and other Celtic regions to honour the deceased, often local personalities or warriors. In Sauzon, on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, these structures are part of a landscape marked by an ancient human occupation, linked to agricultural, maritime and possibly commercial activities. Their presence attests to the social organization and spiritual beliefs of local people, although the details specific to this site remain partially documented.
The tumuli also served as landmarks in the landscape, marking territories or places of collective memory.
