Origin and history

The Champollion de Figeac Museum is a cultural establishment located in the city of the same name, in the Occitan region. He is specifically dedicated to the world's writings and pays tribute to Jean-François Champollion, famous for deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics. This museum is housed in Champollion's home, giving it a unique heritage and memorial dimension.

The name "Musée Champollion" may be confusing, as there is another museum of the same name located in Vif, Isère. The latter is dedicated to the memory of the two Champollion brothers: Jean-François and his elder, Jacques-Joseph. Unlike the Figeac museum, the museum of Vif is housed in the house of Jacques-Joseph, Jean-François's brother, and not in their place of birth.

The two museums thus share a common theme related to the legacy of the Champollion brothers, but they differ in their location and approach. Figeac's focus is on the world writings and the life of Jean-François, while Vif's focuses on the relationship between the two brothers and their joint contribution to Egyptology and the humanities.
