Origin and history
Notre-Dame-des-Ormes Chapel is a religious building located in the municipality of Piney, in the department of Aube, in the Grand Est region. Built in the second half of the 16th century, it adopts a rectangular plan 17 metres long by 5.5 metres wide. Its name evokes an old plantation of elms, now extinct, which probably marked its immediate environment at the time of its foundation.
Originally, the chapel served as a branch to the parish of Piney before acquiring the status of parish parish parish within the dean of Brienne. She also exercised spiritual guardianship over the nearby town of Villevoise, which she herself later became parish priest. This ecclesiastical role reflects its importance in the local religious organization during the Ancien Régime.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of January 6, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Piney, the chapel is today an architectural testimony of the Renaissance in Champagne, although its current use (cult, visits, or other) is not specified in the available sources. Its exact location, 62 Rue de la Chapelle, confirms its anchoring in the city's historic urban landscape.
