Origin and history

The chapel of Saint-Claude-la-Colombière, located in Paray-le-Monial (Saône-et-Loire), was built between 1929 and 1934, in an architectural style marked by a Latin cross and vaults on cross of warheads. Consecrated in 1930, it is dedicated to Claude La Colombière, a Jesuit canonized in 1992 by John Paul II. Its apses, decorated with mosaics, celebrate major figures of the order of the Jesuits, while its marble pillars emphasize a neat aesthetic.

The building, oriented north-northeast, consists of a nave, a transept and a three-vessel choir, extended by a central apse and two apsidioles. It was listed as a historical monument in 2012, and was classified in 2022, recognizing its heritage value. Several artists contributed to his decoration, including Musaïsts Mauméjan, painters Charlier and Dovoine, and sculptor Castex, under the direction of architects Bossan and Léonard.

Owned by an association, the chapel illustrates the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Jesuits in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its official address, 27 rue Pasteur, and its inscription in the cadastre (parcelle AM 146) attest to its anchoring in the urban fabric of Paray-le-Monial, a city marked by its religious history since the Middle Ages.
