Origin and history

Saint-Jean-Baptiste-du-Clos Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel in the commune of Vieux, Calvados, Normandy. Dated from the 13th century, it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is located at the place called Château de l'Étang. The building, of rectangular shape (8.50 m x 4.10 m), is built of limestone and sandstone, with a sculpture adorning a door in full hanger. Disused between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was integrated into a larger building.

A fire in the 1980s destroyed its structure, which was later rebuilt. The ruins of the chapel, with the exception of the adjacent barn walls, have been listed as historical monuments since 24 August 1994. The building reflects Norman medieval religious architecture, although its present state is evidence of successive transformations and degradations.

The chapel illustrates the rural religious heritage of Calvados, marked by reuses and adaptations over the centuries. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage value, despite its partial integration into an agricultural structure. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its local importance, although little is known about its founders or its precise initial use.
