Origin and history
The remains of the ancient chapel of Argelliers are a rare example of religious architecture of the High Middle Ages in Languedoc. This monument, classified by decree of 4 August 1978, is presented in the form of a rectangular room oriented, characteristic of the first Christian buildings in the region. Its current state allows only an approximate location, assessed as "passible" (note 5/10) according to the geographical accuracy criteria.
The building is attributed to St Benedict of Anian, a major figure in the Benedictine reform, which would have had it erected before the year 799. This dating places the chapel among the oldest Christian places of worship in the Herault department. The remains, identified under Cadastre E 183, illustrate the early implantation of Christianity in the rural areas of present-day Occitanie, although their accessibility and present state remain poorly documented.
The protection under the Historic Monuments underscores the heritage importance of the site, despite the lack of practical information about its visit or contemporary use. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its connection to the municipality of Argelliers (code Insee 34012), in the former Languedoc-Roussillon region, now integrated into Occitanie. No mention is made of modern reuse (rent, tourism) or recent archaeological excavations.
