Origin and history

The chapel of the Trinity, located in Bonifacio, Corsica, is a uniquely nave religious building, vaulted with three bays and a flat bedside. Its vaulting and enlargement of the choir date from the end of the 13th century, marking its first phase of construction. The remains of a 9th century Carolingian church, discovered nearby, attest to an ancient religious occupation of the site.

In the 18th century, the orientation of the chapel was changed, reflecting liturgical or architectural adaptations of the period. The façade was deeply transformed and raised in 1912, giving it its present appearance. Around the chapel are ancient conventual buildings to the south and an oratory to the north-west, while exterior facilities (parvis, terraces, walls) complete the whole.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 2016, the chapel includes in its protection the convent, the oratory, and various related elements. A communal property, it bears witness to almost eight centuries of religious and architectural history in Corsica, mixing medieval heritage, Baroque modifications and modern restorations.
