Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Michel de Laussac, located in the village of Laussac in the commune of Thérondels (Aveyron), is a Romanesque religious building. Built in the 12th century according to the sources of Monumentum, it is dedicated to the archangel Michael and preserves the relics of Saint Gausbert, a monk who would have founded a priory at this site. Its unique nave rectangular plan, vaulted with a frame, is characteristic of rural Romanesque architecture.
The chapel is closely linked to local history: it would have been built by the monk Gausbert, whose remains still rest in the building. Although the associate priory has almost entirely disappeared, the chapel remains as a testimony of medieval monastic life in Rouergue. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1974, recognizing its heritage value.
Located near the Sarrans dam on the Lassac peninsula, the chapel offers a picturesque setting between religious heritage and natural landscape. Its exact location (5295 Presqu'Île de Laussac) and its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments (decree of 16 December 1974) make it a protected site, now owned by the commune of Thérondels. Sources also mention a Creative Commons license for certain photographs of the monument.
