Chapelle de Marsan (Box B 426): entry by order of 1 March 1973

Origin and history

The chapel of Marsan, located in Saint-Lizier, Occitanie, is a religious building built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It replaces an ancient temple dedicated to Mars, an ancient heritage that gives the site a particular historical dimension. The place, spared by the Moors after the Battle of Poitiers, became a major pilgrimage point as early as the 10th century, after an epidemic of black plague was stopped, attracting faithful in search of divine protection.

From the ancient medieval chapel, today only the original settlement remains. The current construction, dated 1851, incorporates a shepherd's shelter and is characterized by a rectangular plan illuminated by four windows. His stone campanile supports a statue of the Virgin, symbol of Marian devotion. The monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1973, belongs to the commune of Saint-Lizier and retains a vocation both spiritual and heritage.

The site, although located with poor accuracy (level 5/10 depending on the sources), remains an architectural and historical testimony of popular piety in Ariège. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines its importance in the religious and cultural landscape of Occitanie, between pagan heritage and Christian tradition. The approximate GPS coordinates (7 Chemin de la Chapelle) and its communal property status make it an accessible place, although its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified.
