Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie chapel, built at the end of the 15th century on the Atlantic coast of Penmarch (Finistère), owes its name to the gratitude to the Virgin for the protection of sailors. Its location, between the ports of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé, makes it a place of devotion linked to the dangers of the sea. A defence wall, regularly rebuilt (every 30 years depending on the sources), protects the building from ocean assaults, as evidenced by the repairs of 1888, 1896 or 1998.

Ranked as a historical monument in 1916 with its adjacent calvary (built in 1588), the chapel embodies Breton religious architecture: bell tower-wall facing the sea, frame in the shape of a ship hull, and 18th-century altarpiece transferred from Saint-Nonna church. His ex-votos — models of suspended boats — and his statues (Vierge à l'Enfant, Saints Méen, Como and Damien) reflect maritime piety. The pardon of 15 August, once major in Bigouden country, mixed procession into traditional costumes and blessing of the sea.

The granite calvary, restored in the eighteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, represents a scene of Crucifixion and a Pietà. The chapel, threatened with sale in 1889, was saved by successive restorations (roof in 1891, lambris in 1909). His image, reproduced on the 20-franc post "Pêcher" (1942-1950), and works by artists such as Ernest Guérin or Lucien Simon (Musée d'Orsay) immortalized his cultural role. Today it remains a symbol of spiritual and community resistance to the elements.

The interior houses a carved frame evoking a ship's hull, with adorned sandstones and arch keys, as well as a bow siren. The attire, with a fireplace, was used to prepare for forgiveness. Historical sources (Fréminville, Quiniou) point to its possible origin at a pagan site, while local archives detail the repeated damage of storms, such as that of 1896 that destroyed the protective wall.

Communal property, the chapel and its calvary (VA 1) are open to the visit. Their location on GR 34, at approximately 997 Rue de la Joie, makes it a major heritage stage of the Finnish coast. The ancient photographs and the preserved paintings (Musée de Quimper, Musée d'Orsay) document its evolution and its anchoring in the Bigouden identity.
