Origin and history
The chapel of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei is a Catholic religious building built in the 15th century in the eponymous village of Orne, Normandy. It replaces a 12th century oratory, showing spiritual continuity on this site since the Middle Ages. Inside, a block of stone nicknamed the bed of the saint intrigues archaeologists, some seeing there a menhir reused, vestige of a pre-Christian era.
Ranked a historic monument since 22 October 1926, the chapel illustrates the rural religious architecture of Lower Normandy. Its location south of the village, near the Sarthe River, makes it a historical and landscaped landmark. The sources mention its communal property, but no information is available on its current use (visits, cults, or other functions).
External references, such as the Merimée base or religious heritage observatories, highlight its heritage importance. However, the details of its furniture, its possible restorations or its precise role in local life in the 15th century remain absent from the source texts. Its inscription among the historical monuments of Orne makes it a protected example of Norman medieval heritage.
