Origin and history

Crest Cordeliers Chapel is a religious building built during the second half of the 16th century. Located in the municipality of Crest, in the department of Drôme (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), it illustrates the religious architecture of the late Renaissance. Originally linked to a cordon convent, it was transformed into a parish church under the name of Sainte-Marie. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 20 May 1986 bears witness to its heritage value, although its exact location (4 Rue du Clocher) is considered to be fair (note 5/10).

Currently owned by an association, the chapel retains protected architectural elements, as evidenced by data from the Merimée database. Its history reflects the religious and urban changes of the region, where begging orders, like cordons, played a central role in spiritual and social life. Drôme, integrated into the former Dauphiné province, was then marked by tensions between Catholicism and Protestantism, a context in which this type of place of worship could serve as a symbol of resistance or adaptation.

The chapel, now known as St Mary's Church, may have had a variety of uses (cult, community gatherings, or even accommodation). Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify whether the site is open to the public, but its association status suggests local management to preserve this heritage. The Creative Commons license for Associated Photo (Remi Mathis) indicates a contemporary documentary interest in this unknown monument.
