Origin and history
The chapel of the Penitents of Ginasservis is a religious building built in the 14th century, located in the commune of Ginasservis, in the department of Var (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). This monument, typical of medieval Provencal architecture, was inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 19 October 1927. It now belongs to the commune and bears witness to the importance of the brotherhoods of penitents in the religious and social life of the region at that time.
The brotherhoods of penitents, very active in Provence from the Middle Ages, played a central role in popular devotion, assistance to the poorest and the organization of processions. These groups, often made up of lay people, marked community life by their practices of charity and penance. The chapel of Ginasservis, by its early inscription as the Historical Monuments, illustrates the heritage recognition of these places of worship, even if the precise details of its foundation or its initial use remain partially documented.
Depending on the available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, the location of the chapel is specified as 1 Chemin des Oliviers, with an address validated by the municipality (code Insee 83066). Geographical accuracy is considered very satisfactory (note 8/10), which facilitates its identification. However, no information is provided on any historical figures related to its construction or past use.
The building, a communal property, could now be used for various purposes, such as visits, room rentals or tourist activities, although current practical information is not detailed in the sources consulted. Its state of conservation and access are not specified, but its status as a Historic Monument has guaranteed heritage protection for nearly a century.
