Origin and history

The Chapel of the Grey Penitents is a religious building located in the commune of Aubagne, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. It is representative of the chapels of fraternities of penitents, very widespread in Provence from the Middle Ages. These brotherhoods, often dedicated to devotional and charitable practices, played a major social and spiritual role in Provençal cities.

The chapel was listed as historical monuments by order of 29 June 1927, which is a testament to its heritage importance. Today it belongs to the municipality of Aubagne. Although the available sources do not specify its exact period of construction, its architecture and use suggest an origin linked to the local religious traditions, typical of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
