Origin and history
The Petit-Puy Chapel is a disused chapel located in Terves, an associated municipality of Bressuire (Deux-Sèvres). Built in the 16th century, it belonged to the old house of Petit-Puy, surrounded by a fortified enclosure with seven towers. These defensive elements, as well as the adjoining home, were destroyed during the Vendée War, a major conflict of the late eighteenth century.
The building, the only remaining vestige of the estate, was registered as historical monuments by order of 29 December 1941. Its location, north of Terves, along the D 938 ter road linking Bressuire to Fontenay-le-Comte, makes it a point of heritage interest in the Deux-Sèvres landscape. The chapel illustrates the rural religious architecture of the Renaissance, although its present state also reflects local historical upheavals.
Today, the Petit-Puy chapel is referred to in heritage databases such as Mérimée and the Observatory of Religious Heritage. Its precise address, 9002 Le Petit Puy à Bressuire, and its Insee code (79049) place it administratively in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, heiress of the former Poitou-Charentes. No information is available on its current access to the public or its contemporary use.
