Origin and history

Guillemin-Montebello Funeral Chapel is a monument located in Pau, New Aquitaine region. Built during the 4th quarter of the 19th century, it is part of the tradition of funeral buildings of that time, often linked to notable families or local personalities. These chapels served as both a place of recollection and a symbol of social prestige, reflecting the importance attached to funeral rites in bourgeois society of the time.

At the end of the 19th century, Pau was a booming city, marked by lively social life and eclectic architecture. Funeral chapels, such as Guillemin-Montebello, testify to this period when wealthy families invested in private monuments to honour their deceased. These buildings, often decorated and neat, were integrated into cemeteries designed as real gardens, reflecting the aesthetic and religious values of the time.
