Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-l'Isle Chapel, located in Goudelin in the Côtes-d'Armor, is a religious building dating from the 2nd half of the 15th century. It is distinguished by its bell tower and porch, classified as historical monuments in 1913. Inside, there is a polychrome wooden statue of Notre-Dame de l'Isle, as well as a medieval gissant representing Guillaume de Goudelin and his wife Marie de Portztrevenon. Three paintings by the Briochin painter Raphaël Donguy (1859), including L'Annunciation and La Descente de la Croix, adorn the walls. A bronze bell, engraved with Roman characters, is installed in the bell tower.

The architecture of the chapel combines elements of different periods: the bedside and some pillars date from the end of the 14th century, while the bell tower and other pillars were added at the beginning of the 16th century. The arrow, destroyed, was rebuilt in 1714, and the south wall restored in 1849. The building also houses a monumental cross and was documented by drawings by Henri Frotier de La Messelière (1907-1931). Several photographs and archives are kept by the Bretagne Cultural Inventory.

The chapel is a place of devotion marked by its artistic and funeral heritage. Guillaume de Goudelin, local lord, and Donguy's paintings testify to his historical and religious importance. Partially classified for its bell tower and porch, it remains a significant example of Breton religious architecture, between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
