Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes chapel in Saint-Pierre is a Catholic religious building located on the island of La Réunion, in the southwest of the Indian Ocean. Built in the second quarter of the 19th century, it is precisely the Bois-Noir driveway, in the Bois d'Olives district. Its modest architecture, marked by white paint and a sheet roof, reflects a simplicity characteristic of the local buildings of the period. It has not undergone any changes since its construction, thus preserving its historical authenticity.

The chapel is assigned to Catholic worship and hosts two weekly Masses on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. It was listed as a historic monument on December 17, 2015, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by a diocesan association, it is distinguished by its integration into a densified district, while preserving its original appearance, especially its yellow ochre color partially visible under white paint.

The building, though modest, plays a role in local religious life. Its listing of historical monuments protects the entire chapel, including its sacristy and plated grounds. The sheet roof and the rare openings, like the front impostes, underline its functional and sober character, typical of the small rural or island chapels of this period.
