Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a religious monument built during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. It is located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This place of worship, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 23 February 1965, is today the property of an association. Its official address, according to the Mérimée base, is 17 avenue Durand-Maillane, although GPS coordinates also suggest a location close to Jean de Nostredame Street.

The chapel embodies the Provencal religious architecture of its time, marked by increasing baroque influence. At that time, religious buildings played a central role in community life, serving as both a place of prayer, gathering and spiritual support for the inhabitants. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, like other cities in the region, was then a crossroads of cultural and economic exchanges, where chapels and churches often reflected local devotion as well as the patronage of wealthy families or brotherhoods.

According to available data, the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel is today a protected heritage, whose location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note of 7/10). Although its current status in terms of openness, rental or specific use is not detailed in the sources, its listing as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance. Associated photographs, such as Véronique PAGNIER's Creative Commons license, help document its existence and current state.
