Origin and history
Notre-Dame-des-Cieux Chapel is a religious building located in Huelgoat, Finistère department, Brittany. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its architecture and stained glass windows, still visible in the abside. These artistic elements, typical of the Breton Renaissance, bear witness to the cultural and religious richness of the region at this time.
The chapel was classified as historic monuments by order of 12 November 1914, thus recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects not only its structure but also its interior decorations, including 16th century stained glass windows. Located on Rue des Cieux, it remains an emblematic place of local heritage, managed by the municipality of Huelgoat.
In the 16th century, Brittany, then integrated into the Kingdom of France, experienced a period of reconstruction and artistic development after the wars of succession. Chapels, such as Notre-Dame-des-Cieux, play a central role in community life, serving as places of worship, gathering and identity markers for parishes. Their decoration often reflects both local and European influences of the time.
