Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-du-Sehring Chapel is a religious building located in Guebwiller, Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region. Built in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, it bears the date of 1618 on its door and was consecrated in 1625. This monument, characteristic of the Counter-Reform, was originally used as a pilgrimage chapel before being converted into a cemetery chapel in the early 19th century, in 1810.
The chapel houses a set of ten paintings made in 1709 by artist Franz or François Hillenweck. These works, coming from the church of the Dominican convent in Guebwiller, were transferred to them after the French Revolution. The building, owned by the municipality, has been listed as historic monuments since 28 February 1991.
Located in Colmar Road, the chapel is an architectural and artistic testimony of Alsatian religious history. Its inscription as a historical monument underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for the works it preserves. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an official address recorded as the route to Colmar, 68500 Guebwiller.
