Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Antoine de Chastel-sur-Murat is a religious building located on the former commune of Chastel-sur-Murat, now attached to Murat in the department of Cantal, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Perched at 1,187 meters above sea level, it offers an exceptional view of the surroundings. Its origin dates back to the 11th or 12th century, with an initial structure with a unique nave and apse in cul-de-four, typical of Romanesque architecture.
In the 15th century, two arched side chapels were added, forming a false transept, while a sacristy was built in the 16th century. The south gate, decorated with archicvolts and ground pedestals, also dates from the 15th century and is protected by a wooden porch. The tower-wall, robust and equipped with an external staircase, has two arcades, one of which houses a bell.
Ranked a historic monument in 1947 and listed as a site in 1943, the chapel illustrates medieval and modern architectural evolution. Its roughly carved capitals and circular bench in the abside testify to its liturgical and community use. The building, owned by the municipality, remains a symbol of the religious heritage and landscape of the Cantal.
