Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Bernardin d'Antibes, also known as the chapel of the Penitents-Blancs, is a religious building built in the sixteenth century, probably between 1513 and 1581, by the brotherhood of the White Penitents dedicated to Saint Bernardin of Siena. Its origin dates back to an ancient place of worship, as evidenced by the Roman foundations discovered under the current building. In the Middle Ages, Antibes was a major episcopal city, and the brotherhoods of penitents played a central role in religious and social life.

These groups, often linked to begging orders such as Franciscans, organized processions and charitable works, while marking their presence with dedicated chapels. The chapel underwent several changes, notably after the fire of the 1970s which required a complete restoration between 2007 and 2008. Its walnut portal, dated 1581, is a rare testimony of the local crafts of the period, while the 16th century frescoes and the 17th century altarpiece illustrate the evolution of artistic styles.

A significant event in its history is its protective role during the plague epidemic of 1580, where the Antibois attributed their salvation to the intercession of Saint Bernardin. This devotion is reflected in the bas-reliefs of the pediment, representing penitents and Lucifer's head, symbol of victory over evil. In the 17th century, the chapel was enriched with a baroque altarpiece from the convent of the Cordonniers, destroyed in 1920.

This furniture, typical of the Counter-Reform, reinforces its sacred character. Today, it has been included in the additional inventory of historical monuments since 1995 and remains a place of worship and visit. Its trompe-l'oeil ceiling, decorated with the four evangelists and Saint Bernardin, as well as its starry apse, make it an artistic jewel.

The chapel is open to the public and still hosts offices, thus perpetuating its spiritual and cultural vocation. Recent restoration has highlighted elements such as the reproduction of Antoine Aundi's Descent of the Cross, highlighting its heritage importance. Its location in the heart of Antibes makes it a privileged witness to Provencal religious history.

Finally, the chapel illustrates the mixture of Italian and Provencal influences, typical of the region. Its sober architecture and interior decorations contrast with the richness of neighbouring episcopal buildings, such as the former Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Platea.
