Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Blaise is a religious building located in the commune of Bulat-Pestivien, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is surrounded by an enclosure and accompanied by a cemetery, forming an architectural ensemble dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its origin dates from the 16th century, as evidenced by the calvary present in the old cemetery, classified in 1911. This site, a place of pilgrimage, is distinguished by a western facade decorated with a 17th century portal, framed by pilasters inspired by the Renaissance and surmounted by a pediment decorated with a cartridge and lions.

The chapel is characterized by a square stone bell tower, covered by an arrow open with skylights and florets, resting on a base adorned with sills and ties. Its arched portal, typical of Renaissance influence, is framed by two foothills connected by an arch. The ensemble, partially classified or listed as historical monuments in 1911 and 1964, reflects the architectural evolution of Brittany between the late Middle Ages and the modern era. The 16th century Calvary, the oldest element, highlights the religious and memorial vocation of the site.

Owned by the municipality of Bulat-Pestivien, the chapel illustrates the rural religious heritage of Brittany, where parish enclosures played a central role in community life. These spaces served as places of worship, assembly and burial, marking the landscape and local identity. The protection of the monument by the decrees of 1911 and 1964 bears witness to its historical and artistic value, especially for its facade and bell tower, emblematic elements of Breton religious architecture in modern times.
