Origin and history
The Saint-Claude Chapel is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Cipières, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Built mainly during the last quarter of the seventeenth century, it underwent major transformations in the nineteenth century. Its architecture combines a large central nave flanked by two side chapels, extended by a polygonal apse. The vaults vary according to the space: full-circle cradle for the main vessel, five-quarter warheads for the choir, and edges or broken cradle for the chapels. Plumbing tiles, originally used for the bell tower, were re-used as tiles behind the altar, showing the successive reuse of materials.
The history of the chapel reveals a complex evolution. A first nave, extended by a porch, was attested as early as 1629 and revised around 1645, as indicated by the engraved dates. During the second half of the 17th century, a large nave was erected across the old, relegating the initial porch and choir to the rank of lateral chapels. A 1793 estimate mentions the partial destruction of a bell tower and the recovery of its tiles, illustrating the adaptations imposed by political and economic contexts. The chapel was finally included in the inventory of historical monuments on 8 June 1979, recognizing its heritage value.
The building has remarkable architectural features, such as the layout of a apiary between the vault of the choir and the roof, reflecting local usage. The chapel, owned by the municipality of Cipières, is part of the Provencal religious landscape, marked by successive redevelopments and harmonious integration into its rural environment. Its designation as historic monuments in 1979 underlines its importance in the heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes, alongside other classified buildings in the region.
