The façade and the bell tower (Box XB 71): inscription by decree of 20 March 1934

Origin and history

Saint-Germain Chapel is a religious building located at Saint-Germain, in the commune of Langonnet, Morbihan department, Brittany. Dating from the 16th century, it illustrates the Breton religious architecture of the Renaissance, with characteristic elements such as a bell gable decorated with a circular aisle door and gargoyle florets. Its granite bell, openwork, bears witness to local craftsmanship.

The chapel underwent later changes, including the reconstruction of its bell tower in 1726 and the reshuffle of the southern bays. These transformations reflect the liturgical and aesthetic needs of successive periods. The façade and bell tower, which have been listed as historic monuments since March 20, 1934, underline its heritage importance. This classification protects prominent architectural elements, such as the door with a braid and carved decorations.

At the time of its construction in the 16th century, Brittany was a dynamic region, marked by an economic boom linked to agriculture, maritime trade and handicrafts. The chapels, often erected under the patronage of local lords or brotherhoods, played a central role in community life. They served as places of worship, assembly for religious holidays, and sometimes asylum for travellers. The Saint-Germain chapel is part of this context, as evidenced by its architectural characteristics and its subsequent inscription as historical monuments.
