Chapel (Box A 263): inscription by order of 25 August 1994
Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Jaucourt, located in the eponymous village of the department of the Aube (Great East region), dates from the last quarter of the 12th and 13th centuries. On a rectangular plane (5.4 x 10 m), it is distinguished by its Romanesque door decorated with a trilobed tympanum, characteristic of the religious architecture of this period. This monument, now isolated, was originally integrated into a castral complex, of which it constitutes the last vestige with the ruins of the surrounding towers and walls. Its interior, probably entirely painted in medieval times, reflected the symbolic and decorative importance of the seigneurial chapels.
Ranked among historical monuments since 1994, the chapel illustrates the religious and military heritage of medieval Champagne. Its official inscription, by order of 25 August 1994, concerns the entire building (cadastre section A, plot 263), highlighting its historical and architectural value. Although its present state does not allow full appreciation of its original context, the traces of paintings and its Romanesque structure offer an overview of artistic and religious practices of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in this region.
The location of the chapel, at approximately 9001 Impasse de la Chapelle, confirms its anchoring in the rural fabric of Jaucourt, a commune attached to the district of Troyes. Its initial role, linked to the castle on which it depended, suggests a spiritual function for both local and defensive lords, typical of the castral chapels. Today, its access and vocation (visit, worship, or other) are not specified in the available sources, but its status as a protected monument guarantees its preservation for future generations.
