Saint Lubin - Bishop of Chartres (VIth century) Pilgrimage and fountain dedicated to him.

Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Lubin d'Yèvre-le-Châtel, located in Yèvre-la-Ville in the Loiret, dates from the first quarter of the 13th century. This monument, classified by decree of 12 July 1886, is distinguished by its medieval architecture: a unique nave of two spans, a transept with crucifixes reduced to one span, and a choir with flat bedside. The still standing elements include the walls, the gables of the façade and the bedside, as well as two northern modillons of the choir. The three-window bedside and the four-archivot ogival portal, decorated with crouched-leaf capitals, illustrate the nascent Gothic style. A double pool with warhead archvolts, located in the choir, bears witness to its liturgical use.

The chapel was associated with a pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Lubin, Bishop of Chartres, attracting faithful to a nearby fountain bearing his name. Tombs with Gothic inscriptions, once present in the building, were transferred to Saint-Gault church. An adorned, moved arch key decorates today the tympanum of the door of the Pithiviers Sub-Prefecture. The building, a communal property, has lost its cover and vaults, but retains traces of its religious and architectural past.

The site, although partially in ruins, remains a testimony of medieval devotion and primitive Gothic architecture in the Centre-Val de Loire. Its early ranking (1886) underscores its heritage importance, linked to both its religious history and its unique stylistic characteristics for the region.
