Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Martin-de-Serres is a Romanesque chapel located west of the hamlet of Serres, in the commune of Carpentras (Vaucluse). Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, it originally belonged to the Sobriats family, a line of Spanish origin settled in the Comtat Venaissin after the arrival of the popes in Avignon. Its architecture, typical of the Romanesque style, reflects the regional influence of the period.
The chapel was integrated into the buildings of the Sobirats property, including the last descendant, Victor de Sobirats, who left the whole estate to the municipality of Carpentras. This legacy allowed the site to be transformed into an agricultural high school. The chapel itself was listed as historical monuments on 2 March 1971, recognizing its heritage value.
Today, the chapel of Saint-Martin-de-Serres, with its bas-relief adorning the main facade, remains a testimony of local history and the architectural heritage of Comtat Venaissin. Its precise location, at 1353 Chemin de l'Hermitage, and its status as communal property make it an accessible place, although its opening to the public is not explicitly documented.
