Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Mathieu de Kerc'hras is a religious building located at Kerc'Has, in the commune of Névez, in the Finistère department (Bretagne region). Built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, it bears the date of 1753 on its bell tower, attesting to its origin. Its simple architecture, with a unique nave and a cut-sided bedside, reflects its use as a secondary chapel for peasants far from the village, as well as as as a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Mathieu. The presence of a source and blocks of stone on the site suggests a possible Celtic origin of worship there.
The chapel is distinguished by its western facade, pierced by a door in the middle of the hanger surmounted by a prominent pediment and a small rectangular opening. Its rectangular plan, devoid of collaterals or transept, illustrates a sober architecture, typical of the small rural Breton chapels of the period. The site, combined with a source, could indicate a continuation of cultural practices since a period prior to Christianization.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 23 March 1972, the chapel today belongs to the commune of Névez. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its historical role in the religious and social life of the inhabitants of the region. Protected elements include the entire chapel (Cadastre ZC 55), thus preserving its integrity for future generations.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée database, highlight its local importance. The chapel is located at approximately 3 Kerc'Has, 29920 Nevez, in a rural environment marked by pilgrimage traditions. Its state of conservation and its location (estimated at 6/10) make it a modest but significant testimony of the religious heritage of Brittany of the eighteenth century.
