Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Michel de Homps, located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region, is an ancient parish church built in the 12th century, and remodeled in the 13th and 14th centuries. This place of worship, originally dedicated to Saint Stephen, was given in 1148 by the Archbishop of Narbonne to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Associate Commander's Office was not formally constituted until 1237, under the authority of the Grand Priory of Saint-Gilles. Its architecture is characterized by a nave of two spans ending in a semicircular apse, as well as capitals carved in a rustic and archaic style.
In the 19th century, the construction of a new church in the village condemned the medieval building to demolition. To avoid its destruction, it was bought by an individual and transformed into a private chapel. The portal, added after the initial construction, presents a broken arch, typical of subsequent architectural developments. The building was listed as historic monuments in 1951, recognizing its heritage value.
According to the sources, the chapel is located at 13 Avenue de Carcassonne in Homps, and its conservation status is considered satisfactory (note 8/10 for location accuracy). The protected elements include the old church as a whole, as defined by the cadastre (single section, parcel 174). Although private property, its history reflects the religious and architectural transformations of the region, from its medieval parish role to its modern preservation.
