Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Pancrace de Forcalquier is a priory located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This religious monument, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, bears witness to the architecture and spirituality of this period in south-eastern France. Its designation as historic monuments in 1997 underscores its heritage importance and preservation for future generations.

In modern times, priories such as Saint-Pancrace played a central role in local life, serving as both a place of worship, community gathering and sometimes an economic centre for surrounding villages. Forcalquier, the historic town of Haute-Provence, was then marked by a rural and artisanal society, where religious buildings were major social and cultural landmarks. These monuments also reflected the artistic and religious influences of Provence, between medieval traditions and Renaissance evolutions.
