Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is built in the first half of the 20th century in Louvemont-Côte-du-Poivre, on the site of the former parish church. It is distinguished by its cross-centered plan with octagonal dome, inspired by neoclassical funeral chapels, while integrating a typical geometry of Art Deco. The enclosure wall of the cemetery, rebuilt in 1929, surrounds, highlighting its memorial role.
Louvemont-Côte-du-Poivre is one of the nine Meusienne communes declared "dead for France" after the First World War, due to the total destruction suffered during the Battle of Verdun. Unlike other villages, it is decided not to rebuild them, but to preserve their administrative existence. Between 1930 and 1934, nine commemorative chapels, financed by titles of war damage, were erected to perpetuate their memory.
The chapel, designed by architect Georges Perceval, symbolizes both the victims of the conflict and the disappearance of the village. Its architecture, combining neoclassicism and Art Deco, reflects a desire for modernity while honouring a tragic past. Ranked a Historic Monument in 2021, it also includes the floor of the plot and the wall of the cemetery in its protection.
