Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Roch de Montbonnet, located in Bains en Haute-Loire (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is mentioned for the first time in 1213 in a document of the Hôtel-Dieu, then in 1217 in an archive of Templars. It served as a stage chapel on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, especially for pilgrims crossing the Velay. Its architecture preserves traces of its medieval origin, like a door in third-point typical of Templars and windows with Romanesque braces.
In 1321, the chapel was dedicated to Saint Roch, commemorating his visit to Montbonnet on his return from Rome. In the 14th century, it would have been burned by looters, then restored in the 15th century. The early window of the bedside was probably moved at that time. In the 20th century, woodwork was added around the choir in 1935, and the building was classified as a historic monument in 1969.
Inside, there is a vaulted choir with a flat bedside decorated with arms from the Montlaur family. The chapel thus illustrates centuries of religious and architectural history, linked to the jacquarian pilgrimages and the order of the Templars. Its classification in 1969 underscores its exceptional heritage value.
