Origin and history

The Chapel Saint-Sébastien of Ricey-Haut is a religious building located in the commune of Riceys, in the department of Aube, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, it is a typical example of the Christian architecture of this period, marked by late Gothic and renaissant influences. Its designation as historic monuments in 1980 reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this local heritage.

In the 16th century, the Aube region, then integrated into the province of Champagne, was marked by a mainly agricultural and wine-growing economy. The chapels, like that of Saint Sebastian, played a central role in community life, serving as places of worship, assembly and spiritual protection. They were often erected on the outskirts of villages or along roads, symbolizing both the faith of the inhabitants and their attachment to patron saints, such as St Sebastian, invoked against plague and epidemics.
