Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Sulpice d'Istres, located in the commune of Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône), is a religious building dating back to the second half of the 11th century. Its construction periods span several centuries, with works attested to in the thirteenth, fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. This monument, classified by decree in 1942, thus reflects an evolutionary architecture, marked by various stylistic influences peculiar to each era of its construction.
The chapel is now owned by the municipality of Istres. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments, effective since July 6, 1942, underscores its heritage importance.
