Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Vérédème d'Eyguières is a Romanesque religious building located in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is located south-west of the village, along departmental road 7 and the great hiking trail 6. This monument, classified as historical monuments since 16 October 1906, is dedicated to Saint Vérédeme, a local emblematic figure.
Saint Vérédemus, also called Veredemus, was a hermit of Greek origin who had lived in the Alpilles. He became bishop of Avignon at the beginning of the eighth century and is now venerated as the patron saint of Eyguières. The chapel, owned by the commune, thus embodies a religious and historical heritage linked to this personality.
The architecture of the chapel, typical of the Provencal novel, reflects its importance in the cultural landscape of the Alpilles. Its early classification (1906) highlights its heritage value, while its location along a road and hiking path makes it an accessible point of interest. Available sources, such as Chapelles de Provence by Serge Panarotto, document its history and role in the region.
