Origin and history

Saint Vincent de Puy-Saint-Vincent Chapel, built in the 15th century, is a listed historical monument located in the commune of Puy-Saint-Vincent, in the Hautes-Alpes. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent de Zaragoza, as evidenced by the 15th century murals covering its interior walls. These paintings, restored between 1978 and 1979, represent scenes of the saint's life as well as other religious figures such as St.Antoine and Christ during a meal at Simon's. The chapel, although often associated with Vincent Ferrier (a Dominican missionary who came to preach in the area between 1399 and 1403), was not appointed in his honour, for it existed for its canonization in 1455.

The small chapel includes a unique nave illuminated by narrow windows and a cul-de-four apse. Its modest architecture, with a tuff bell tower and stone corner chains, reflects the local construction techniques of the time. A pilgrimage was attested to in the 19th century, emphasizing its spiritual importance for the inhabitants of the Vallouise valley. The chapel has been restored several times, especially to preserve its frescoes, which are among the most remarkable of the Hautes-Alpes.

Puy-Saint-Vincent, where the chapel stands, is a mountain village located at an altitude of 1,400 meters, dominated by the Écrins massif. Historically, the region was marked by agricultural and pastoral activities, as well as religious conflicts, such as the struggle against Vaud heresy in the Middle Ages. The Saint Vincent Chapel, with its frescoes and its history, illustrates the importance of the Catholic faith in this isolated Alpine valley, while serving as artistic and architectural testimony of this period.

The Saint Vincent Chapel is today a major historic place in the commune, attracting visitors for its history and frescoes. It is part of a collection of local religious monuments, such as the chapel Saint-Roman (XII century) or the church Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (XVI century), which bear witness to the historical and cultural richness of Puy-Saint-Vincent. Its classification as a historical monument in 1990 ensured its preservation for future generations.
