Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Yves, located in Rennes in Ille-et-Vilaine, is a religious building built in the sixteenth century, although its origins date back to 1494, when it replaced a 14th century oratory. It is part of a former hospice founded in 1358 by Canon Eudon Le Bouteiller, priest of the diocese of Tréguier, in a context of crisis linked to the War of Succession of Brittany. This hospice, dedicated to the Virgin and placed under the invocation of Saint Yves, canonized in 1347, was intended to welcome the sick and the poor of the city, in response to the ravages of the sieges suffered by Rennes, especially that of 1356-1357.

Over the centuries, the St. Yves Hospital grew with donations and foundations, from 82 beds in 1583 to 220 poor people welcomed in 1630. The Augustine nuns of the Mercy of Dieppe provided care there from 1644 to the French Revolution, before returning in 1804 to participate in the transfer of the hospital to its current location in 1858. The chapel, for its part, temporarily served as a place of worship for the Cathedral Chapter between 1754 and 1790, after the condemnation of St Peter's Cathedral, considered dangerous.

Transformed into hardware after the hospital was moved, the chapel was classified as a historic monument on 10 March 1945. Repurchased by the city of Rennes in 1981, it was restored and hosted the tourist office until 2019, before being put on sale in 2025 for a project compatible with its heritage valuation. Its architecture, marked by a rectangular nave and engraved 15th century sandstones, makes it a rare testimony of the hospital and religious history of the city.

The main façade, on Rue Le-Bouteiller, features a low arched door topped by three empty niches, while the side façade, on Rue Saint-Yves, offers four windows, including an imposing one. Inside, the nave preserves historical elements such as a 15th century vault and sandstones, although the altarpiece of 1673 and the organ buffet, mentioned in the inventory of 1793, have disappeared. Today, the chapel embodies both an architectural heritage and a collective memory, linked to the urban and social evolution of Rennes.

Its history also reflects the transformations of the city, notably with the canal of Vilaine in the nineteenth century, which led to the gradual destruction of adjacent hospital buildings. Despite these upheavals, the chapel remains a symbol of medieval charity and of the adaptation of religious buildings to the changing needs of society, moving from a place of care to a cultural and tourist space.
