Origin and history

The Sainte-Madeleine Chapel of Bissey-la-Côte is a Roman Catholic religious building, founded in 1292 by Raoul de Layer and buried there. Located in the hamlet of Layer-sur-Roche, on the commune of Bissey-la-Côte (Côte-d'Or), it was initially attached to a priory dependent on the Abbey of Pothières. This monument, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, features a nave supported by pillars and an intermediate arch added to support its bell tower.

The chapel underwent reshuffles in the 16th century, especially in its baptismal fonts, a bas-relief and a statue of Saint Anne dating back to that period. The door, once in the middle of the wall like the windows, was repaired and modified in 1834. After a long restoration campaign between 1956 and 1971, it was included in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 7 December 1976.

The chapel furniture includes notable elements such as a 17th century wooden altar trim and a trunk for offerings carved from a tree stump. These objects, as well as the massive architecture of the building, bear witness to its evolution throughout the centuries, from its medieval foundation to its more recent transformations.

Today, the chapel belongs to the municipality of Bissey-la-Côte and remains a representative example of the religious and architectural heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its inscription as a Historic Monument underlines its cultural and historical importance in the region.
