Chapelle Sainte-Matrone (ruines) (Box B 523): classification by order of 27 August 1975
Origin and history
The Sainte-Matrone chapel of Mazères-sur-Salat, built in the 12th century, served for a long time as a parish church for the village that once lay at its feet. Its architecture is distinguished by a unique rectangular nave extended by a narrower apse, with a semicircular bedside. The axis of the apse does not coincide perfectly with that of the nave, a notable feature.
The apse opens with a triumphal arch in the middle of the hanger, supported by columns decorated with carved capitals with vegetal motifs. These stylistic details reflect the Romanesque art of the period. The chapel, now in ruins, was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 27 August 1975, thus recognizing its heritage value.
The chapel is owned by the commune at 295 Chemin du Maridou, in the Haute-Garonne department. Its current state and openness to the public are not specified in available sources. The GPS location is considered satisfactory, with an address validated in the Merimée database.
