Origin and history
The remains of the Sarlat-la-Canéda enclosure are defensive architectural elements built in the 14th century. These structures, located mainly around Voltaire Boulevard and Rue du Headquarters, include a tower and other remains listed in the Historic Monuments. Their location reflects medieval urban organization, with fortifications designed to protect the city.
The enclosure tower at 3 Voltaire Boulevard was registered by order of 26 October 1944, while other remains, spread over several addresses (7, 8, 9, 11 Voltaire Boulevard, 1, 3, 5, 7 Manuel Street and Headquarters Street), were registered on 7 March 1945. These protections illustrate the heritage importance of these remains, although their exact location is considered poor (accuracy note: 5/10).
These fortifications, now partially private, recall Sarlat-la-Canéda's strategic role in the Middle Ages. Their presence reflects the city's defence needs in a regional context marked by conflict and trade. However, their current status and accessibility remain poorly documented in available sources.
