Origin and history
La grange des Charmes is a Cistercian barn located in Semmadon, Haute-Saône department. Built in the second half of the 12th century, it belonged to Cherlieu Abbey and is located in the heart of a clearing. The building has undergone alterations over the centuries, but preserves the Romanesque elements characteristic of its time.
The barn was listed as a historic monument in 1991, recognizing its heritage value. Protected areas specifically include Romanesque elements, excluding later 19th century additions. Today, it remains an architectural testimony of Cistercian influence in the region.
Located in a rural area of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, this barn illustrates the economic and agricultural role of medieval abbeys. These buildings often served as a storage and management centre for surrounding lands, reflecting the monastic organization and its impact on local development.
