Origin and history

Mirande's Chartreuse was built between 1784 and 1785 in Bordeaux, on the initiative of Jean-Pierre Labat de Serene, a shipowner and merchant in wheat and flour. He acquired the Bourdieu de Mirande in 1775 and erected it there, in a context of Bordeaux architectural renewal marked by the influence of Victor Louis, an architect who came to work in the region. The building is distinguished by its symmetrical façade, its double wrought iron grilled porch, and its balusters, complemented by windows and shutters of the era.

Inside, two salons preserve paintings on canvas by Jean-Baptiste Butay, integrated into woodwork. The main rooms, living rooms and rooms, are equipped with fireplaces in white marble or stone, decorated with grooves or sculptures. A compartmented cellar, located to the north, completes the whole. The Chartreuse thus reflects the delight of the Bordeaux elites of the time, mixing functionality and decorative art.

Classified Historic Monument by order of 10 October 1980, the Chartreuse protects its facades, roofs, as well as three bedrooms and four lounges with their original décor. The official address, 20 avenue de Mirande, places the monument in the department of Gironde (code Insee 33063), in New Aquitaine. GPS coordinates confirm this location, with an accuracy deemed satisfactory (note 7/10).
